Lyrical Miracle: Creativity in Creation (front cover)
In this 80-page stream of story-poems, prayers, songs and ideas, Shayley shares her insights about God, nature, and her mind’s own characters and worlds. Then, in the last chapter simply called “Ideas Shared,” she includes new games and projects that you and your family may want to try if you want to kick-start new imaginative adventures.
She wrote these things from ages 5 to 8. I’m biased, of course, but she truly seems to have a gift from God, which I pray she will continue to use in His service.
Here are excerpts from each of the four chapters of Lyrical Miracle: Creativity in Creation (by Mountain Grace Publishing, 2009) . . .
Chapter 1: The Creator
God’s Quilt (about a picture she drew at church)
This painting tells you:
God’s fingers are rainbows,
His face a spiral of light,
His castle made of butterflies,
The stars of hearts thou made,
He made the world,
A razzle of joy,
Leaves as neon lightness,
Loves as a bunch of colors,
The land might be partiful,
Thee has not made a pool of happiness,
Spirals of evil are turned
Into Spirals of Color,
Burst into greatness,
Light forth go the way,
Curtains fly joy,
Bunching joy,
Loving much,
Beach of loneliness,
Shall go into color,
Flowers of beauty,
Keep good mother earth,
Our Father,
Protect daughter continent,
Watch over baby country,
Over cousin state,
And over Grandmother county,
Amen.
Chapter 2: The Created
Earth’s Beautiful Creatures
Someday when the cardinal sings its first spring song
All of humanity will sing along.
With God’s peace and eternal love
Coming to us from up above
Sharp as a bear, soft as a dove,
And someday soon
Birds sing tunes
Crickets croon
Just know
To sow
Your seed
To grow.
Babies, what they do is play
All day, as they may,
So I say,
Just know,
So your seed
To grow.
Sing along,
Sing your song,
And I long,
To belong
In the fronds
And, after all,
When it is the last of fall
Nature is still alive
Nature still will thrive
When doing our daily routine
We should stop and look at the greens.
Beyond the sun
And the sunset
There are flocks of birds, I bet
And on the ground, way back down below
Bugs are helping the earth to grow.
From tiny shrubs to great big cedars
Do not be a nature-weeder
And in fact, we are needers
Of Earth’s beautiful creatures.
Chapter 3: Creating
I’ve Outgrown Kindergarten
I’ve outgrown Kindergarten
(and almost my teacher)
I’ve outgrown the song and the sights
And the feature!
I’ve outgrown the frog, and puddles and bogs!
I’ve outgrown the friends I used to have there.
I think I’ve outgrown my own old hair!
I’ve outgrown the shakers, I’ve outgrown the chair!
Dufus Rufus
Dufus Rufus is a dog
We found him chewing on a log.
We took him home and named him Rufus
We found out he was a dufus
That means accident-prone
We’d have double the trouble
If he had a clone.
He scratched the couch
He chewed the chairs
When we went to bed
We had Rufus nightmares.
He always ate our food
And pooped in the house
One day he caught and drug in
A mouse!
Its blood sprayed
All over the door
Not to mention on the floor.
He got a chewtoy with which to play
Which he broke
Leaving a rubber array.
He barked and barked
Keeping us up all night
Howling and howling with all his might.
Rufus was a dufus
As you know
Had friends
But had some foes.
He upset the neighbors
For cryin’ out loud
He howled at the moon
And disturbed the cloud.
Kids were scared of him
So was I
Some ran away from him
That’s no lie!
He won’t let us walk him
On a leash
He tried to break free
Bad dog, SHEESH!
Chapter 4: Ideas Shared
Switcho Nursery Rhymes
Pickory Pickory Pock
The mouse was about
To rock
When she fell into
My sock.
Bawl bawl black sheep,
You lost your little lamb,
Why don’t you go
To the beach
And find a clam!
Little Jack corner,
Bumped a big horner,
That his mother
Didn’t see
All she saw
Was a bee!
Penny the hen
Laid eggs of ten,
One on her neck,
One on her chin,
One on her elbow,
That one wins!
Penny the hen
Laid eggs of ten!
Simpleton Simon
Spent a dime on a rod to catch his dinner.
And when he cast it out
He caught a thread and spinner.
Found a tomato,
Found a rack,
Found an abandoned shack.
His tomato he, almost ate
He figured out, it had a worm for bait.
While her Dad and I have been focusing on building a solid foundation of faith and unconditional love for her, Shayley has transformed us with her amazing mind, living language and artful vision. We hope it will also inspire many others, by driving us all deeper and yet lifting us up.
May we all have some fun in the storms!
